A Texas Photograph Goes Viral
Ella Langley’s record-breaking country hit, “Choosin’ Texas”, supplies an apt title for a different Texas story.
An image from last weekend’s University of Texas football game has become a widely viewed political image on X. It shows a tightly packed section of young Longhorn fans who appear overwhelmingly South Asian.
Bo French had heard that UT’s graduation ceremony looked like this. Seeing the football crowd convinced him the report was plausible. His post has received more than 44 million views because the picture touched an issue that Americans are accustomed to noticing and discouraged from discussing.
One widely shared rejoinder was that the men looked American. They wore burnt orange and cowboy hats. They cheered for the Longhorns. Charles Murray summed up that response: “Sure looks like a bunch of American guys to me.”
That may be true. It still leaves the central question unanswered: Does America’s historic population have a legitimate interest in remaining a majority in the country it built?
The Missing Moral Argument
Most people instinctively understand demographic continuity when the people in question are Japanese, Koreans, Indians, Tibetans or Navajos. Their continued existence as recognizable peoples is treated as a human good. No one demands that Japan explain why it should remain predominantly Japanese or that India justify remaining predominantly Indian.
Western peoples deserve the same consideration.
The American constitutional order arose from British legal and political traditions transplanted by European settlers. Over time, other European populations joined that founding stock and assimilated into the country it had created. The result was a society prosperous, orderly and attractive enough that millions of people from across the world have sought to enter it.
That attractiveness is measurable through revealed preference. In 2024, OECD countries admitted 6.2 million permanent immigrants, a historically high total. The United States alone received about 1.4 million, more than any other OECD country.
The success of Western societies has been turned into an argument for their indefinite demographic transformation. Because these countries are safe and prosperous, they are expected to admit newcomers until the populations that created them become minorities. No comparable obligation is imposed on the rest of the world.
A civilization isn’t a set of statutes floating above the people who live under them. Its institutions depend on habits carried through families and communities: trust, self-restraint, low corruption, impersonal law and cooperation with strangers. Population and institutions can’t be separated indefinitely.
Assimilation Doesn’t Answer The Question Of Scale
The Texas photograph may show successful assimilation. That makes it evidence of one thing, not everything.
Assimilation asks how newcomers and their children behave. Demographic continuity asks how many arrive, how quickly they arrive and whether the historic population retains its place. A person can speak perfect English, love football and become a productive citizen while large-scale immigration still transforms the country’s demographic character. Individual assimilation and population-level change occur at the same time.
UT’s own figures underscore the distinction. Its international office counted 1,923 international undergraduates during the 2025–26 academic year, out of 44,314 undergraduates overall. International students account for a small share of UT undergraduates. Many people in the photograph may be Americans whose families arrived in an earlier immigration wave. The lasting demographic question concerns American citizens and their descendants.
The transformation of Coppell, Texas, makes the scale visible. Bennett’s Phylactery recently quoted a post documenting the change in the town’s school district:
Texas Education Agency records show that Coppell ISD was 73.3% white in 2003. That share fell to 52.9% by 2011 and 21.4% in the 2024–25 school year. Asian students now account for 57% of the district.
A community went from a large white majority to a large Asian majority in little more than two decades. That is demographic replacement in the ordinary descriptive sense: one majority disappeared and another took its place. It occurred through migration and generational change while continuity remained outside the accepted goals of public policy.
Real Diversity Requires Distinct Places
The world’s most meaningful diversity exists among distinct peoples and places. Seoul should feel Korean, Delhi Indian, Kyoto Japanese, Paris French and the English countryside English. A world containing such places is more varied than one in which every desirable city converges on the same international mixture.
The cosmopolitan ideal produces sameness at a global scale. The same internationally mobile professional classes settle in the same prosperous neighborhoods, attend similar institutions and recreate their commercial and social networks wherever they go. Each destination gradually becomes less particular.
Immigrants lose something in that process too. Many people move because they want to experience a different country and participate in its culture. When every diaspora can reproduce a largely self-contained version of its home society inside the destination country, newcomers have less reason to encounter the country they crossed the world to join.
The social costs extend beyond aesthetics. Robert Putnam found that immigration and ethnic diversity reduced trust, altruism and community cooperation among residents of every race in the communities he studied. A 1997 study by Alberto Alesina, Reza Baqir and William Easterly found that ethnic fragmentation in American cities was associated with lower spending on productive public goods such as schools, roads, libraries and sanitation.
Those findings describe mechanisms through which rapid demographic change can make daily life worse for everyone. The deeper loss is a people’s continuity in its historic home. A culture isn’t a museum exhibit. It remains alive because a population carries it forward.
The Principle The Right Must Claim
The American right usually argues about whether immigration is legal, whether immigrants commit crimes, whether they depress wages or whether they assimilate. Those questions matter, but they come after the fundamental one.
Even legal, peaceful, prosperous and culturally assimilated immigration can transform a country’s demographic character. If the historic American population is never permitted to say it wants to remain a majority, the outcome has already been decided. Immigration will continue through bureaucratic momentum, employer demand and family networks until that majority disappears.
An interest that no one will articulate has no political defender.
The policy implication is straightforward. Immigration should be kept at a level compatible with the demographic continuity of the historic American population. Admissions should serve the long-term interests of the country, including its interest in remaining recognizably itself.
Western peoples don’t owe the world their own minority status as the price of having built attractive societies. They have the same claim to collective continuity as every other people. The right needs to make that case plainly, because silence guarantees the opposite outcome.
A world with recognizably English, French, German, Korean, Japanese and Indian places is richer than a world in which every successful country becomes the same global blend. If the West loses its distinct peoples, the descendants of those peoples lose their inheritance. The people who came to share in that inheritance lose something too.
Preserving Western demographic continuity is a defense of real human diversity.

This is a very thoughtful analysis of current social events. Thank you for writing this, David. It explains how a lot of people feel in a succinct and non-threatening manner. Great post.
I asked chatGPT if this how racist this article was and it said it was only 8/10, so you have some room to go further next time.
"If you want a rough scale: 8/10 racist. It avoids crude slurs and doesn’t claim individual South Asians are inferior, but its policy principle is essentially: even perfectly assimilated non-European Americans are undesirable in sufficient numbers because they make the European-descended population a smaller share of the country. That’s much more than a dog whistle; it’s basically the thesis."
